Reinvigorating and Re-establishing Culture at the Heart of Seychelles’ Economic and Social Development

The Seychelles National Institute for Culture, Heritage, and the Arts (SNICHA) is pleased to announce the launch of a new project entitled “Reinvigorating and Re-establishing Culture at the Heart of Seychelles’ Economic and Social Development.” This project is funded by the International Fund for Cultural Diversity (IFCD) of UNESCO and the 2005 Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions and has received a grant of 79,583 USD.

The project will run from 1st March 2025 to 1st June 2026, aiming to support the sustainable development of Seychelles’ cultural and creative industries (CCI) by establishing a system of governance for culture and promoting national cultural content.

Key Objectives of the Project:

  • Identify cultural reforms to strengthen and place culture at the core of Seychelles’ society.
  • Review and enhance the attractiveness and promotion of Seychelles’ national cultural content.
  • Develop new methods to ensure equitable access to cultural content across different sectors of society.

The project will lead to the following deliverables:

  1. A comprehensive diagnostic report identifying gaps and achievements in the existing legislation, regulations, and strategies related to the CCIs in Seychelles.
  2. The development of Seychelles’ Quadrennial Periodic Report (QPR) on the implementation of the 2005 UNESCO Convention, with input from international experts and key local stakeholders.
  3. A roadmap for the stimulation of the CCI sector, with recommendations for legislative reforms, policies, and resources required for its development.
  4. Increased access to and participation in the CCI sector through targeted training, awareness-raising workshops, and capacity-building activities for local cultural stakeholders.

Activities include:

  • Stakeholder engagement workshops on Mahé, Praslin, and La Digue.
  • Training programs led by international experts to guide the preparation of the QPR and the development of a sustainable framework for CCI in Seychelles.
  • Design and delivery of capacity-building workshops on topics such as accessing funding opportunities, improving governance, and leadership development in the CCI sector.

This project is a critical step in positioning the cultural and creative industries as key drivers of economic and social growth in Seychelles, reflecting the government’s commitment to preserving and promoting the nation’s cultural heritage.

IFCD is a fund established under the 2005 Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions to promote sustainable development and poverty reduction in developing countries that have signed the agreement – which Seychelles did in June 2008.
