Pierre Poivre Bust

From Lyon to Macao, Poivre’s journey was fraught with adversity, yet his botanical zeal led him to smuggle cinnamon seedlings to Mauritius, ultimately birthing the famed Jardin du Roi on Mahé. Despite setbacks, including the garden’s tragic destruction in 1780, cinnamon found a resilient home in Seychelles, flourishing across the islands and becoming a cornerstone of their economy by the early 20th century. Bicentennial Monument

Inaugurated in 1979 to commemorate the bicentennial of Victoria’s founding, the sculpture’s three pairs of extending wings symbolize the triadic origin of the Seychellois race, representing the continents of Asia, Africa, and Europe. Conceived by Italian artist Lorenzo Appiani, the monument’s enigmatic shapes evoke the island’s cosmopolitan identity and mixed ancestry, while its resemblance to avian wings has earned it the local moniker “moniman twa lezel” (three-winged monument). As a testament to Seychelles’ rich cultural tapestry, this sculpture serves as a timeless tribute to the archipelago’s heritage and the enduring spirit of its people.

The Botanical Gardens

The Botanical Gardens at Mont Fleuri provides a vibrant showcase of Seychelles’ natural beauty. Spanning 15 acres, the gardens feature six endemic palms among exotic varieties, indigenous trees, and colorful ornamentals. Visitors can also marvel at a large pen of giant Aldabra tortoises. Established in 1901 with the help of botanist Paul Evenor Rivalz Dupont, the gardens were designed to propagate fruit trees and timber of economic importance. A stone monument honors Dupont’s contributions and Desmond Foster Vesey Fitzgerald, who introduced ladybirds to combat coconut pests. Notable plantings include a female coco-de-mer tree by Prince Philip in 1956 and a Wright’s gardenia by George Harrison in 2000. On June 3, 2044, a time capsule containing poems and essays on environmental repentance, buried in 1994, will be unearthed beneath a giant mango tree. The Botanical Gardens remain a must-visit for those exploring Seychelles’ lush flora and fauna.

Diamond Jubilee Fountain

Doulton of London, the porcelain masterpiece boasts intricate patterns and a unique statuette of Queen Victoria, the smallest representation of her likeness. Safeguarded in 1977 and meticulously restored in 1993 by artist Lucy Hickerson and local curio stall owner Senville Henry, the fountain now features a replica statuette by British sculptor Tom Bowers, donated for Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation anniversary. The Victoria Clocktower

Established in 1875 by the Church Missionary Society for the children of liberated slaves, Venn’s Town was named after Anglican evangelist Henry Venn.
